Shots shatter front door of restaurant Friday night

Shots rang out on South Granard Street late Friday evening when someone fired a gun at a restaurant, according to Gaffney police.

No one was injured in the incident but the shots shattered the front door of the Sandwich Castle, causing an estimated $700 in damage.

"It never happened before and I don't know why it happened that time," said restaurant owner Jimmy Upchurch, who wasn't at the restaurant Friday evening.

Two patrons were inside the restaurant when the incident occurred. One of them, a Gaffney man, told police he heard three gunshots and then what sounded like rounds bouncing inside the building.

Another patron, a woman from Blacksburg, told police she had observed a white full-size sport utility vehicle turning north onto Granard Street from Rutledge Avenue just before the shots were fired.

The police report indicates the incident happened about 11:30 p.m. Friday. The type of firearm used in the incident is unknown.

Movie stolen

A West Smith Street man told Gaffney police that someone stole a backpack from his truck sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning.

The only thing of value in the backpack, he told police, was a movie he rented from the Movie Gallery. The stolen movie cost $50 to replace and the backpack was worth about $20, police said. Police said no damage was reported on the truck.

Puppies stolen

Two puppies valued at $300 each were reported stolen from a Blacksburg residence recently, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

The brown labrador puppies were being kept in an outbuilding behind a residence in the 200 block of Huffman Road. The dog owner told police she noticed the puppies were missing at about 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 18. One puppy was a female and the other was a male.

Hit-and-run alleged

A Mooresboro, N.C., man's car sustained an estimated $500 in damage when a hitand run driver backed into him and then fled from the parking lot of Prime Outlets - Gaffney, according to Gaffney police.

After a Nissan truck backed into his Pontiac, Steven Lee McCraw, of Jim McCraw Drive, told police he got out of his vehicle and was able to record the license plate of the truck. Police said the North Carolina tag number on the truck came back to a Statesville man. The case remains under investigation.

ATVs stolen

Gaffney police said two all-terrain vehicles valued at about $7,000 were reported stolen from a Barclay Avenue property.

The thefts of the Kawasaki ATVs occurred in the 400 block of Barclay Avenue sometime between 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday. The ATVs had been parked in the back yard of a residence.

Store burglarized

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the burglary of a Cherokee Avenue business Tuesday.

Police said they responded to an alarm at the Auto-Stop convenience store, 1614 Cherokee Avenue, early Tuesday morning and found a door open, an open safe and money on the floor. Detectives were notified of the break-in after the initial discovery. Police did not say how much money was missing or estimate damages.

Tractor tampering

Two tractors on a Victory Trail Road property were tampered with sometime between Jan. 18 and Jan. 21, according to a complaint lodged with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Police said someone opened the hoods on a 2005 STRG tractor owned by Salem Leasing Corp. of Winston Salem, N.C., and a 1994 GMC tractor owned by S.C. Vocational Rehab, and tampered with the batteries. Someone also stole a battery cover.
