Senators to consider toughening DUI law

      COLUMBIA - Senators said Wednesday that legislation toughening the state's weak drunken driving laws should focus on repeat offenders instead of punishing someone who made a dumb decision once and can hopefully learn from the mistake.

Senate considers bill requiring drug tests for SC candidates
By JIM DAVENPORT Associated Press Writer
      COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - People filing for public office would also have to submit to drug testing if legislators concerned about the fallout of former state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel's admission of cocaine use have their way. Senate Republican Leader Harvey Peeler filed his bill a day after news broke that Ravenel had been indicted on a federal cocaine conspiracy charge.
