AAUW opens February meeting to the public

Coordinator of Chest Pain Center at SRMC will present program on women's heart health

Women's heart health is a topic of recent interest to women all over the United States since women often experience heart attacks differently from men.

Jennifer Smith, coordinator of the Chest Pain Center at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, will address this issue at the next meeting of the Gaffney Branch AAUW. Because of its importance, the branch is opening the meeting to the public. Everyone is invited to attend, regardless of age, sex or educational level.

The meeting will be Monday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Cherokee County History Museum and Fine Arts Center, 301 S. Johnson St. Smith's topic is one of several subjects the Gaffney Branch AAUW geared specifically toward women this year.

Smith is a nationally board certified cardiovascular nurse. She has been a staff nurse in the Cardiovascular Recovery Unit and a teacher in the Coronary Care Unit Clinical Unit at SRMC. Additionally, she taught at the Cherokee Technology Center in its community based nursing program in Gaffney.

Smith received her associate's degree from Greenville Technical College and her bachelor's degree and master's degree in nursing administration and nursing education from Gardner-Webb University.

AAUW's year-long program includes informative snapshots of women who worked behind the scenes to bring about a better life for us today. Karenna Gore Schiff's book, Lighting the Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America, is the basis for continuing biographical sketches about these nine women. AAUW member Naomi Stanley will give a 10- minute talk on Dolores Huerta, the seventh woman discussed in Schiff's book.

AAUW's emphasis is education and equity for women. The Gaffney Branch has contributed to this effort in significant community endeavors. The branch encourages women through its annual gifts to AAUW's fellowship fund. Anyone with either an associate or a baccalaureate degree is eligible for membership in AAUW.
