Sheriff's new DUI unit off to fast start with five arrests
A new DUI Unit formed by the Cherokee County Sheriff Bill Blanton to combat drunk driving in Cherokee County made five arrests this past weekend.
According to police reports, unit member Lt. Tim Clark arrested two people for drunk driving including a 38-year-old Enoree man stopped Feb. 1 at 9 p.m. on Highway 221 in Gaffney and a 47-year-old Gaffney man stopped Feb. 2 at 12:10 a.m. on Wilcox Avenue.
The other half of the new team, Sgt. Todd Parker, arrested three people this past weekend including: a 36-yearold Spartanburg man stopped Feb. 2 at 7:55 p.m. on Highway 221 in Chesnee, a 20-year-old Gaffney man stopped Feb. 2 at 10 p.m. at Providence Road and Beltline Road in Gaffney and a Gaffney man stopped Feb. 3 at 1:20 a.m. on Interstate 85 near the 95 mile marker.
In all three of Parker's traffic stops there also were open container violations, according to police reports.
Two homes shot
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating two separate incidents in which gunshots were fired at homes.
A South Green River Road, Gaffney, home was struck by a bullet early Sunday. Police said an unknown person fired one shot that struck the front door of the home at about 12:45 a.m. The bullet pierced two walls before coming to rest in a bedroom. The recovered bullet appeared to be .40 caliber, police said. The bullet was placed into evidence for testing.
In a second incident, police said a home on North Green River Road was fired upon shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday. Police said a truck parked near the home also was damaged. The report estimated the gunshots resulted in $1,000 in truck damage, $200 in home damage and $150 in window damage.
Officer assaulted
A Gaffney police officer was the victim of an alleged assault inside his home on Monday.
According to a police report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, Ronnie Anderson, who is a Gaffney officer, allegedly was struck several times in the head and body by 39-year-old Scott Humphries, of Mooresboro, N.C., following a confrontation at the officer's residence.
Humphries was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and malicious damage. Anderson sustained a cut on the left side of his face, police reported.
Juvenile arrested
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported the arrest of a Pacolet teen found in possession of beer and a .45 caliber handgun at a Northgate Road residence.
According to a police report, police were dispatched to Northgate Road at about 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 2. The gun seized by police was a Springfield Armory Model 1911 A-1.
Gang graffiti?
The Gaffney Housing Authority filed a police report recently about alleged gangrelated graffiti.
Sometime between Jan. 24 and Jan. 29, according to the report, an unknown person spray-painted symbols and other writing on an apartment building and trash bins at Limestone Courts and Colonial Heights.
Teen bitten
A Gaffney teen walking her dog on East Union Street was bitten on the hand by a pit bull on Jan. 31.
According to a police report, the multi-colored dog allegedly belonged to a Pine Street resident. The dog bite did not break the teen's skin.
Vehicle Stolen
An unknown person inquiring about a vehicle for sale on Peeler Street took it for a test drive but never came back, according to Gaffney police.
The incident occurred Sunday at about 5 p.m. when a person walked up to a Peeler Street residence to inquire about a 1987 Crown Victoria that was for sale on the property. The car owner let the person, whom she did not know, take the car for a requested test drive. The car is valued at about $1,500.
Break-ins reported
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Gaffney Police Department reported the following vehicle buglaries.
A car parked outside the Sagebrush restaurant on West Floyd Baker Boulevard was broken into on Jan. 31 between 7:20 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The thief smashed a window to steal a woman's purse that contained no cash. Damage is estimated at $200.
A Toyota RAV4 parked at Prime Outlets - Gaffney was broken into Jan. 31 between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. The thief smashed a window and stole a woman's purse containing $350 in cash, credit cards and a check. Damage is estimated at $200.
A car parked on Vernon Street in Gaffney was broken into between 10 p.m. on Feb. 3 and 9 a.m. on Feb. 4. The thief stole a CD player and speakers from the car's trunk. Losses are estimated at $300.
A tool box on a work truck parked outside a Corona Drive, Gaffney, motel was broken into between Feb. 3 and Feb. 4. About $1,000 in hand tools are missing. The truck and tools were owned by Design Team, of Savannah, Tenn.
A car parked on South Petty Street in Gaffney was broken into between Feb. 3 and Feb. 4. The thief pried open a window on the 1993 Honda and stole an Alpine car stereo valued at $550.
Office break-in
An apartment office on East Junior High Road was broken into sometime between Feb. 1 and Feb. 2, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
The burglar gained entry to the office by breaking a window. Nothing appeared missing but police said damage and cleanup expenses topped $400.
