Breach of trust involving credit card refunds by employee alleged at hotel
Officials at a Gaffney hotel asked police to investigate allegations a recently hired employee made more than $13,600 in refunds to credit card accounts that didn't belong to hotel patrons.
According to a police complaint, refunds started being issued to a Mastercard and a Visa card account a few days after William K. Ward, a 23- year-old Delaware man, started working at the Holiday Inn Express on Windslow Avenue.
One refund for $542.05 was processed Jan. 30 to a Mastercard account. From Feb. 7 to Feb. 9, an additional seven refunds totaling $6,225.47 were processed to a Mastercard account. And from Jan. 30 to Feb. 7, an additional nine refunds totaling $6,833.47 were processed to a Visa account, according to the hotel's complaint to police.
Ward had called in sick for work on Monday, the day a hotel official called police. Police reported a check of criminal records showed Ward, who began working at the hotel Jan. 28, was wanted by Delaware authorities for identity theft, larceny and failure to appear in court. Cherokee County Detention Center records show Ward was jailed Tuesday on a charge of breach of trust.
