Taste of Cherokee returns March 6

      With March designated as "American Red Cross (ARC) Month," the local chapter of the organization is preparing for its premier fundraising event, "A Taste of Cherokee." This is the seventh year the fundraiser will take place. It is scheduled for March 6 from 5:30 until 8 p.m.

Man makes off with $500 worth in bed sheets
      Gaffney Police are investigating a Monday afternoon incident in which a man allegedly stole $500 in bed sheets from the Pottery Barn at the Prime Outlets - Gaffney. A customer alerted a clerk to the theft and a clerk was able to obtain a license plate number as the alleged shoplifter drove out of the parking lot, police said.

Close to 700 attend benefit to help Blacksburg High teacher battling cancer

      Nearly 700 people packed the Blacksburg High cafeteria after church Feb. 17 for Sunday dinner to help an art teacher recently diagnosed with cancer. School faculty organized a chicken dinner as a benefit for Blacksburg High teacher Jared Harris. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in January and is scheduled to go to Duke University on Feb. 26 to discuss treatment options.

Police make arrest for larceny, DUI
      A 19-year-old Greensboro, N.C., man was arrested for drunk driving and larceny on Sunday after police responded to a report of possible street sign theft. Police said they were initially told two subjects were pulling up a street sign with the word "Dip" on it at College Drive and Limestone Street.

Bag stolen from car
      A child's bronchitis medicine was among the items taken when a diaper bag was stolen from a car on West Frederick Street late Saturday night, according to Gaffney police. The theft occurred in the 500 block of West Frederick Street at about 11:30 p.m. A wallet and some cough medicine also were in the diaper bag. Theft losses were estimated at about $30.

Local pastor adds to scholarship fund
Endowment in honor of son now valued at $60,000

      Dunton United Methodist Church Rev. John Wesley Evans recently added $50,000 to a scholarship endowment he established at Claflin University in memory of his young son. Evans presented the gift last fall. He attended a scholarship appreciation luncheon Jan. 31 at his alma mater Claflin University in Orangeburg.

      The Cherokee County Democratic Party will have a precinct meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Fatz Restaurant on frontage road in Gaffney.

      The V Foundation for Cancer Research and Team ESPN have announced the launch of the 2008 "Show Your Spirit" fundraising campaign, inviting companies, organizations and schools nationwide to unite on March 20 and 21 in the fight against cancer.

Beason wins Duke's Public Servcie Award
      The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting was held at Broad River Electric Co-op on Tuesday, Feb.5, 2008. Executive Director Gene Moorhead recognized sponsoring corporations for the meeting. Gavel presentation by Gayle White, President of the 2007 Board of Directors, was made to Dr. Hank Jolly, President of the 2008 Board of Directors.

Receives degree
      Brent Byars received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations from the University of South Carolina on Monday, Dec. 17. He was also named to the Dean's List for the 2007 spring and fall semesters. Byars is the son of Kimberly Byars of New York and grandson of Dorothy Byars and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Phillips of Gaffney.

      The Cherokee County Literacy Association honored its tutors Thursday, Jan. 10, with an awards dinner at the community college. Receiving certificates of appreciation were Melvin Hampton, Bobby Powell, Lori Batchler, Ruby Shook, Rebecca Poole, and Beverly Champagne.
