Clemson guard

to play against Tech

Clemson guard Cliff Hammonds said he plans to play Thursday against Georgia tech despite breaking the wrist on his non-shooting hand.

Hammonds wore a cast on his right wrist during practice Tuesday. He broke it after he fell while blocking a dunk in the Tigers 73-70 win over Maryland on Sunday night. The senior played the last 16 minutes with the injury.

''I am not going to stop playing the way I am playing, I am still going to give it my all,'' said Hammonds, who has never missed a game in his Clemson career. ''There is some pain, but not as much as yesterday. Hopefully I will be able to do all I can to help this team beat Georgia Tech.''

While Hammonds said he is ready to go, Clemson coach Oliver Purnell said he won't decide whether to play him until after practice Wednesday.

''It appears he can still take care of the basketball,'' Purnell said Tuesday. ''If he can practice tomorrow then we will tape him up with a heavy bandage and he will play on Thursday night.''

Hammonds is second on the team

at 11.9 points a game.

State agents to probe arrest of player

The State Law Enforcement Division will investigate whether Columbia police officers used excessive force when arresting South Carolina offensive lineman Kevin Young last weekend.

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier says Young and other witnesses have said police hit Young several times, drawing blood while taking him into custody early Sunday after a fight in a nightclub district.

Columbia city manager Charles Austin says he asked SLED to look into the arrest so the truth can come out.

Young was charged with fighting and resisting arrest. Spurrier says he will wait and decide whether to punish the freshman once all the facts are revealed.
