Indians lack scoring punch The Gaffney High boys soccer team hasn't had the scoring touch early this season. The Indians mustered just two goals in a pair of losses to open the season last week. Gaffney's Josh Harris tied the game with a goal after halftime but Boiling Springs dominated play after that en route to a 5-1 victory on Friday. Jarrod Bridges, who assisted on Harris' goal, had the only Gaffney goal in a 2-1 loss to Woodruff last Wednesday. With only three returning starters the lack of scoring output shouldn't be a surprise, Gaffney coach Frank Ridlehoover said. "Defense will probably be our strength but we have a lot of new people there, too," he said. Stephen Caldwell returns to anchor the defense, with newcomers Matthew Wheeler, Dean Phillips and Chris Lemaster. Returning starter Jose Martinez, Christian Martinez, Michael Russo and Carson Caldwell will patrol the midfield for the Indians. Adam Frietzche and Will Blanton each have seen action in goal for Gaffney. Up front, Harris, one of the team's leading scorers a year ago, and Bridges will be counted on to supply the offense. Dorman and Mauldin are expected to battle it out for the top spot. Spartanburg and Hillcrest will also be strong contenders for one of the region's four playoff spots. The Indians will travel to Spartanburg today and will host Byrnes on Thursday. |
