Blacksburg residents could face new and higher fees

      Services once enjoyed by Blacksburg taxpayers for free may soon come with a price tag following Blacksburg Town Council's first view of the budget for the 2009 fiscal year on Tuesday. Blacksburg is slated to spend $4.1 million this year, which is significantly down from last year's total of nearly $5.5 million.

Company wants ordinance changed

      There could be more billboards popping up if an outdoor advertising company gets its way. Daisy Outdoor Advertising representative Joey Lemmons requested the Cherokee County Planning Commission recommend the county amend its land use regulation ordinance to exempt billboards from the minimum lot size requirement.

UPS workers sign union authorization cards

      CAYCE - An overwhelming majority of about 440 workers at the UPS Freight (formerly Overnite Transportation) terminals in Gaffney, Greenville and Columbia have signed authorization cards to become Teamsters. The move brings the total number of drivers and dockworkers seeking to join the union to about 7,640 since Jan. 16, Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa announced.

      Cherokee County has been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Cherokee County has been chosen to receive $44,427 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

Cherokee County will renew waste disposal contract

      The county's contract with Allied Waste to operate the transfer station is about to get a sequel. Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary said it appears the county will agree to extend its contract with Allied Waste.
