Gaffney falls to Byrnes

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

This time, the Byrnes Lady Rebels were smiling after their game with Gaffney.

Byrnes made the most of just five hits in beating the homestanding Lady Indians, 5-0, on Tuesday and avenging a loss last month in the Gene Lee Memorial Tournament.

Gaffney had runners in scoring position in every inning but the first and second but couldn't score.

"We just didn't come ready to play," a disappointed Gaffney coach Kelly Ellis said. "We had runners on base but we just couldn't drive them in."

The Lady Rebels got the timely hits, scoring three runs in the fourth to break a scoreless tie.

Byrnes added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Gaffney starter Julie Sarratt gave up five hits and struck out three to pick up the loss.

Megan Sexton, Katie Patterson, Cameron Crocker, Megan Stanridge and Sarratt all had hits for the Lady Indians, who fall to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the region.

Gaffney steps out of conference on Thursday to play York.

The Lady Indians will return to the diamond on Friday at the Lexington High tournament.

"We just have to get this game out of our system and come ready to play," the Gaffney coach said.
