Boosting the economy doesn't apply to the government Dear Editor: Charles Bumgarner wrote an excellent letter to the editor pertaining to the Pentagon accepting a bid to have Air Force tanker jets built in Europe. Boeing's bid was higher, but since when has any branch of government been conscientious of how they spend taxpayers' money? The thing that makes this even more ludicrous is that it comes on the heels of the government spending $42 million for postage to send letters to the people who will receive $600, although I am sure they already know who they are. These people are being strongly encouraged to spend the money to help boost the economy. Meanwhile, it's obvious that boosting our economy does not pertain to the government as they would rather have Air Force jets built in a foreign country on a learn-as-yougo assembly line instead of by a landmark American Company who would propose a quality product. I feel our country is in the worst shape it has been in, at least in my lifetime. This is clear in the inferior junk from China that has inundated our stores. How very sad that government of the people - by the people - and for the people, no longer exists. Alvin Toffler wrote Future Shock several decades ago, and stated "We are doomed to a massive breakdown." Is there any doubt? Rhoda Snyder Gaffney, S.C. |
