They have worked wonders with him

This letter is in response to Patty Linton's Feb. 22 letter about the S.C. School for the Deaf and the Blind. I totally agree with her. As the mother of a deaf and mute son, I thank God for SCSDB.

My son has been going there since he was 2 1/2. He is now 14 and is 6 feet, 4 inches tall and still growing. They have worked wonders with him. Before he started at the school, I could not communicate with him, nor him with me. I remember how both of us would sit on the floor and cry because I didn't know what he wanted or needed. Now, even though my signing is limited, we communicate great. He has become the teacher to me. If I sign something wrong, he will take my hands and show me the right way.

He stays in the dorm during the week. Even though SCSDB is a great school, it took his counselor two years to talk me into letting him stay in the dorm. (He had always been with me.) Now I'm glad I did it. The dorm has helped my son so much. He is around other deaf teens and he has matured so much. The dorm is a wonderful place.

The school offers so much for its children. It helps them to come out of their shell and become confident adults. My son has always been shy, but now he is going to be in a musical the drama class is doing. I am so proud of him.

In closing, I just want everyone to know about the S.C. School for the Deaf and the Blind and how much it relies on donations and help. Again, I thank God for this school.
