Creating new opportunities is campaign's goal
With a proclamation declaring March as Disabilities Awareness Month, Governor Mark Sanford has underscored South Carolina's commitment to new and expanded opportunities for people with disabilities. The Governor's Proclamation encourages South Carolinians "…to work together to promote increased opportunities for people with disabilities, to recognize the many contributions made by people with disabilities, and to honor the dedication of the caregivers who bring support and hope to their fellow citizens."
The Governor's action kicks off participation by the Cherokee County Disabilities and Special Needs Board (DSN Board) in a statewide public awareness campaign, Able and Ready: People with Disabilities CAN…. The campaign is designed to demonstrate successful community inclusion programs for people with disabilities and encourage the expansion of employment opportunities.
The Proclamation celebrates the successful partnership between people with and without disabilities as well as the increasing involvement of people with disabilities in education, employment, and community activities.
The Cherokee County DSN Board provides services to over 250 people in Cherokee County with the severe lifelong disabilities of mental retardation and related disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury.
The purpose of the campaign is two-fold:
To support the acceptance and inclusion of our consumers - people with disabilities - into our communities.
To raise awareness among consumers and their families regarding the many services available to help them fulfill their personal needs and hopes.
The Cherokee County DSN Board was represented at the March 5th Disability Advocacy Day in Columbia. This annual event, co-sponsored by the SC Partnership of Disability Organizations, is an opportunity for self advocates, families, and providers to advocate for needed services.
The Cherokee County Disabilities and Special Needs Board is REACHing out to others by Respecting, Educating, Advocating, Caring and Helping citizens of Cherokee County with lifelong, disabling conditions. The Board is located at 959 E. O'Neal Street and the phone number is 864-487- 4190.
