Gaffney golfers tied for second

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

The Gaffney High golf team didn't like being beaten badly by Dorman earlier this week.

So, the Indians came out more focused during a blustery first round of the T.W. Memorial at Three Pines Country Club - and it worked.

The Indians are tied with Dorman for second at 315 heading into today's final round.

"It was a little payback," said Gaffney coach Todd Coggins, referring to the Cavaliers' eightshot victory on Tuesday. Blythewood High leads the 2-day tourney with a 310.

Matthew Hopper shot a 3-over 75 to lead the Indians. He shot a 4-over on the first five holes but rebounded to go 5-under over the final 14 holes.

"He hit fairways and greens," Coggins said. "He didn't sink a lot of putts, but he had a lot of chances."

Phillip Rogers had a 78, while Adam Goins shot an 80 and Daniel Whisenant had an 82 for the Indians.

Coggins said he was impressed with the scores, especially with the windy weather conditions.

"We just wanted to make pars and stay in contention," he said. "We knew that if we shot around 80, we'd be okay."

Showing just how fickle the game of golf can be, Dorman's Will Ovenden shot a disappointing 84 on Thursday after shooting a blistering 5- under 31 at Cherokee National on Tuesday.

Woodfin Ridge hosts today's final round. "If we can shoot around 75, we'll have a chance," Coggins said.
