A first for First Steps

      Limestone College student alumni will hold a benefit run Saturday, April 12, to help support the Cherokee County First Steps program. The benefit 5K and one mile runs will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center on the Limestone College campus. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m.

Woman drives off with man's wallet, phone
      A Tennessee man getting a ride from a Boiling Springs woman was left without a wallet and cell phone when he was ditched at an I-85 rest area in Cherokee County, according to a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. The 25-year-old man said he stopped at the rest stop for a bathroom break and that the woman drove away and left him there after he walked inside.

Gala raise $1.1 million for scholarships

      The fifth annual education gala for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Thursday evening in Greenville raised $1.1 million for the state's historically black colleges. Gaffney residents Rev. J.W. Sanders Jr. and Naomi Stanley served on the 2008 gala steering committee that planned the black tie affair held by the Upstate chapter of the UNCF.

County OKs $20,000 to design bridge

      Although it will likely be an expensive pill to swallow, Cherokee County Council has decided to move forward with its bridge replacement plans. Council agreed to spend $20,000 to hire a engineering firm to design a new bridge on Double Bridge Road near Highway 29. The engineering firm also will come up with a cost estimate for the new bridge.

Teen gets 8-year sentence

      An 18-year-old Gaffney man was sentenced Tuesday to eight years of imprisonment for his role in the armed stick-up of a pet store. During an afternoon hearing before Circuit Judge James Lockemy, Ryan Daniel Townson pleaded guilty to charges of attempted armed robbery and fleeing and presenting a firearm. He was sentenced immediately afterwards.

February home starts, values down from last year

      The housing slump continued here last month. There were 10 new home starts in Cherokee County in February - down one from the same month a year ago, according to a monthly report issued by the Home Builders Association of Cherokee County.

Volunteer program opens new office here
      The Cherokee County Volunteer Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program has opened a new office in Cherokee County at 412 Wall St. The new location will be closer to the 17 GAL volunteers who work with abused children in Cherokee. "Our volunteers are currently advocating for 75 children throughout this county.
