Gaffney golfers top Vikings, Boiling Springs

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney golf coach Todd Coggins described Thursday's performance against Spartanburg and Boiling Springs as a workmanlike effort.

The Indians shot a 156 to finish six strokes ahead of Spartanburg in the tri-match played at Spartanburg Country Club.

Boiling Springs finished third with a 163.

Matthew Hopper fired a 37 and Adam Goins had a 38 to lead the Indians.

"We did what we had to do," Coggins said. "Matthew and Adam played pretty solid."

Trey Taylor had a 40 and Daniel Whisenant had a 41 to complete the Indians' scoring.

Hopper and Goins were also instrumental in leading the Indians to a second place finish in the Hartman Memorial Tournament, which concluded its final round on Wednesday.

Hopper had a 75-75 - 150, one shot better than Goins, who had a 74-77 - 151. Whisenant had rounds of 81-80 - 161 and Taylor shot 82-80 - 162.

After trailing the Indians by seven strokes after the first round, Blythewood won the tournament with a 319-300 - 619.

Gaffney shot 312 on both rounds.

The Indians have a long layoff before competing in the Hardaway Invitational on April 10.
