USC student

killed in fall

NEWBERRY - A University of South Carolina student has died after falling from a train during what authorities described as a fraternity prank.

Newberry County James Foster said that 20-year-old Robert Chase Campbell's body was found on train tracks in the Upstate Wednesday morning.

Campbell was from Anderson. Foster said he and three other members of the Sigma Nu fraternity had hopped on the train around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday near university fraternity housing in Columbia.

He said the students planned to take a short ride on the train but realized they couldn't safely jump off as the train increased speed.

Foster said the students held onto the train for about 35 miles before Campbell fell off and was struck.

Deputy avoids

being struck

ROCK HILL - The Chester County sheriff says a deputy hurt his knee but avoided being hit by a suspected drunken driver by jumping across the hood of a state trooper's car.

Sheriff Robby Benson told The (Rock Hill) Herald that 36-year-old Everett Ray Atwell Jr. was helping a stranded motorist around midnight Wednesday when he avoided the collision.

Deputies say 25-year-old Joshua Lee Love was charged with driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

Benson said Love also struck a parked South Carolina Highway Patrol car. The trooper sitting inside, 40-yearold Mark C. Love, received minor injuries.

A judge set Love's bond at around $11,000. He was being held in the county jail Thursday night.
