Banquet, awards highlight April 14 meeting of AAUW

The Gaffney Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will meet Monday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Carson's Farm for its annual awards dinner for recognizing outstanding senior women in Cherokee County High Schools and at Limestone College.

Entertainment for the event will include Karen Gainey's talk on Septima Poinsette- Clark, a 20th century woman who worked behind the scenes to bring about a better life for women and men today. Karenna Gore Schiff's book, Lighting the Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America, has served as the basis for short, biographical sketches about these nine women. Dr. Gainey, always a delightful speaker, is Professor of English and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Limestone College.

AAUW's main emphasis is education and equity for women. The Gaffney Branch has contributed to this effort in many community endeavors. The branch encourages women through its annual gifts to AAUW's fellowship fund. Anyone with either an associate or a baccalaureate degree is eligible for membership in AAUW. For more information, call 489-0826 or the college liaison at 488-8288.
