GHS golfers place third in tourney
Hopper shoots 1-under to earn all-tourney honors
      The Gaffney Indians are no run-of-the-mill golf team. They proved it again with a thirdplace finish at the prestigious Hardaway Invitational at Fort Benning, Ga. The Indians chopped six strokes off their opening round score of 306 to finish at 606 after Saturday's final round.

Saints hammer Pfeiffer
      A.J. Vaughn made sure his Senior Day would be a memorable one on Saturday. Vaughn led all scorers with six goals and added an assist to lead the third-ranked Limestone men's lacrosse team to a 16-4 victory over rival Pfeiffer at Saints Field.

      Chamber golf tourney slated for April 19 The 2008 Annual Member Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, will be held Friday, April 18, at Cherokee National Golf Club. Registration and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch catered by Fatz. Shotgun start is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. using a Captain's Choice format.

      Blacksburg baseball coach Toby Elliott couldn't have asked for a better spring break. The Wildcats finished their busy spring break with a 3-1 record after routing Southside, 26-4, on Friday. Dustin Byars was big again for the Wildcats, posting three wins.

      Borrowing from the popular Monday Night Football theme, are you ready for some baseball? About 425 area youths sure are. The local Cal Ripken League opens its regular season today at the Cherokee County Youth Sports Complex.

      Ignore that talk about Hendrick Motorsports slipping into the pack. Jimmie Johnson, the twotime reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, gave Rick Hendrick's powerhouse team its first win of the year Saturday night at Phoenix International Raceway.

     DOWN AND OUTMarcus Willis of Fort Myers, Fla., takes down South Carolina product Courtney Knox during Thursday night's boxing event at Gaffney Middle School. Willis would again score a knock down against his opponent before the referee stepped in to stop the fight. The TKO in the first round was the highlight of the night for fans in attendance as the main attraction, Gaffney's own John Bradbury, did not fight after the South Carolina Athletic Commission would not allow the bout to go on.

Immelman holds on to win Masters
      AUGUSTA, Ga. - Trevor Immelman has never felt better. Four months after he had a tumor removed from his back, Immelman handled the wind and pressure of Augusta National far better than anyone chasing him Sunday to win the Masters, the first South African in a green jacket in 30 years.
