      Drivers call for drug testing The admission by former Craftsman Truck Series driver Aaron Fike that he used heroin on race days last year has some of NASCAR's top drivers requesting more drug testing of racing participants. Moss names BHS coaching staff
      Blacksburg High football coach Mickey Moss has almost completed his coaching staff. Moss spent the past four seasons as Wren head football coach before he accepted a job in late February to return to his alma mater. Moss is bringing two assistants from his staff at Wren to help implement his offensive and defensive systems.

      It looks like facing playoff elimination was just what the Gaffney High baseball team needed to put life into its bats. McCrae Norton had a homer, double and single and John Michaels homered and tripled as the Indians put on an offensive show in a 21-13 victory over visiting Spartanburg on Thursday.

The Wildcats baseball team has qualified for the playoffs by virtue of Chapman beating Woodruff on Wednesday. Their first playoff game will be played next Thursday at an undetermined location.

      Gaffney High golfer Matthew Hopper made sure the seniors closed the regular season with a victory. Hopper fired even-par 36 to lead the Indians to easy victories over Spartanburg and Byrnes Thursday at Cherokee National. Gaffney shot a 9-over 153, eight strokes better than the Vikings. Byrnes was third with a 174.

Panthers to open season at San Diego
      A critical season for Carolina Panthers coach John Fox will begin with a difficult road trip and end with a flurry of road games. The NFL schedule released Tuesday puts the Panthers on a cross-country trip to defending AFC West champion San Diego for their opener Sept. 7.
