BRIEFS Chamber golf tourney slated for April 18 The 2008 Annual Member Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, will be held today at Cherokee National Golf Club. Registration and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch catered by Fatz. Shotgun start is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. using a Captain's Choice format. Prizes for hole in one, closest to the pin, longest drive and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Flights will be awarded. Corporate sponsorships are available at $500 which includes a team and hole sponsorship. Team sponsorships are $300 and includes 2 mulligans and 1 red tee player. Hole sponsorships are $100 each. Sponsorships include publicity both at the tournament and in the media. Local hoop league begins signups The Giving Back Organization is signing up students (boys and girls) ages 5 to 18 for the Free Spring/Summer Basketball Program. The league is for boys and girls ages 5 to 17. You also can sign up by calling Chris Dewberry at 488-9596 or Laymond Dewberry at 425-5860. Three Saints named all-conference Three Limestone College baseball players were named all-conference at the conference awards banquet. Designated hitter Adam McSwain earned First Team honors, while center fielder Zach Watkins and righthanded pitcher Chris Zimmerman were named to the second team. McSwain ranked top 10 in the conference in hits (71), batting average (.390), doubles (13), home runs (11), total bases (57), RBIs (54), and slugging percentage (.654). Watkins leads Conference Carolinas with 25 stolen bases this year. He ranked second in the league in triples, seventh in hits, and top 10 in total bases. Zimmerman ranks top 10 in the league in wins with seven. He recorded complete games against St. Andrews and Barton this season. Saints drop tourney opener The Limestone College baseball team lost to Belmont Abbey, 8-1, on Thursday afternoon at Fleming Stadium. The Saints fall to 23-30 overall. Starter Michael McAbee took the loss, allowing five earned runs in the first 2 1/3 innings. Thomas Fekete allowed three earned runs in 1/3 innings of work. Marques Kyles pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief and only allowed two hits. Jordan Liette closed out the final inning and gave up no hits. Andy Helms picked up the win for the Abbey, striking out five in the first eight innings. Phillip Soden hit a home run for the Saints' only run of the game. Limestone will play either St. Andrews or Pfeiffer today at Nixon Field in the double elimination tournament. |
