High school league approves change of venue for title games
The Gaffney Indians will be taking a different road to the Class 4A Division I state championship game this season - literally.
The South Carolina High School League Executive Committee voted Wednesday to move the 2008 championship games for Class 4A, 3A and 2A from South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium to Clemson University's Memorial Stadium.
The change was made after state lawmakers requested the league consider playing the games at different stadiums.
Gaffney's last visit to Death Valley wasn't a memorable one. The Northwestern Trojans ruined the Indians' hopes for an undefeated season with a 2-0 victory in the 1993 state title game.
Williams-Brice had been home to the state title games since 1996. The Indians have won four of the 12 Class 4A Division I title games played in Columbia since 1996.
The league also voted to allow teams to use full pads for seven of the 10 spring practice sessions. Players will wear shorts and helmets for the remaining three practice sessions.
The league had barred the use of full pads.
Spring practice begins for the Indians on May 12.
Gaffney coach Phil Strickland was out of the office Thursday and unavailable for comment on the league changes.
