Limestone lax teams have home field for tournaments
The Limestone lacrosse teams will host the conference tournament semifinals and finals this weekend. Coming off another regular-season championship, the unbeaten Limestone men's lacrosse team really doesn't need an advantage.
But it has one anyway.
For the first time ever, the Saints will host the Conference Carolinas tournament.
The Saints, who are 10-0 and ranked third in the country, will face St. Andrews in a semifinal today at 11 a.m.
Limestone hardly broke a sweat in posting a 20-3 victory in the teams' regular season matchup. Limestone coach Mike Cerino expects a tougher go this time around.
"I think it will be much closer," he said.
But he expects the Saints to be up for the challenge.
"I feel we have more talent than a year ago," he said. 'We are in better shape and more mature."
The Saints will be led by Brendan Storrier, who was named Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse Player of the Year on Monday.
Storrier is joined on the first team by teammates AJ Vaughn, Justin Haworth, Teddy Prager, Matt Pinder and Mike Piccin.
Saints' CJ Ciaravino, Spencer Wims and James Tuohy all earned second team honors.
No. 2-seed Queens and third-seeded
Belmont Abbey will battle in the other semifinal at 2 p.m.
The championship game is slated for 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Cerino said the Saints likely need to win the tournament to earn a trip to the national tournament.
"We haven't pulled away from anybody yet," he said.
Limestone also will be hosting the women's lacrosse tournament.
The No.-2 ranked Lady Saints will face the winner of the Pfeiffer/St. Andrews game at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The other semifinal will begin at 2 p.m.
Both championship games will have a video webcast through ConferenceCarolinas.tv.
Admission is $5 per day. Student admission is free with valid ID. Children under 12 are also admitted for free.
