Veterans Appreciation Day is Saturday

Veterans Appreciation Day on Saturday, April 26, will offer more exhibits, entertainment, and antique military vehicles and weapons than in the past.

Festivities will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. at the American Legion Hut and Veterans Museum in Irene Park, 200 S. Logan St. There will be displays of military and antique military vehicles and weapons as well as modern day military artifacts. There will be on display Indian artifacts, military Order of the Purple Heart, Marine Corps League, and a CHAPS display.

A civil war encampment with cooking skills and other period artifacts will be presented by Moses Wood Chapter No. 125.

World War II jeeps, trucks, and a WWII half truck are among the military vehicles that will be displayed. Revolutionary War re-enactors will be present along with a display by the American Legion Baseball S.C. State champions 2007, Post 109 of Gaffney.

Union County Line, a popular bluegrass band, will play on and off all day, beginning at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be inflatable rides for kids, free gifts for the veterans, and elementary school students.

The very delicious food will once again be provided by Moses Wood Chapter No. 125. Come early, stay late, bring your lawn chair, bring your camera, get your picture made inside the Huey helicopter firing the machine gun or sitting in the pilot's seat. Also see the United States Air Force T-37 jet plane.

"All veterans, this day is for you and your family, it's our way of saying thank you for your service to our country," an organizer said.
