GHS golfers advance to state

      It wasn't unexpected for the Gaffney High golf team to trail after the first 18 holes of the Region II-4A tournament at Cherokee National on Tuesday. It was unexpected for the Indians to trail first-round leader Boiling Springs, though.

Indians roll into playoffs

      When it comes to the age old chicken-or-egg question, the Gaffney Indians don't want to lay an egg in the playoffs. The Indians entered the season with high expectations after a 4-0 start. That momentum was scrambled after opening the region with four straight losses. But the Indians regrouped, winning four of their final five region games to qualify for postseason play.

Wildcats want to take next step in postseason play

      The Blacksburg High baseball team has been here before. The Wildcats have advanced to the district playoffs for the fifth straight year under coach Toby Elliott. Blacksburg (12-8) travels to top-seeded Liberty for a 6 p.m. game on Thursday. Pelion, the No.2- seed, and Ninety-Six meet in the other first-round district game.

      Burger King tops Compass Matthew Overton had two home runs and Landon Batchler had a sacrifice fly to help Burger King beat Compass, 12-6, in Minor League play. Alec Spencer got the win to improve to 1-0. Jarrett Sowfford and Peyton Campbell each had a RBI and Jordan Seay tripled for the winners.

GHS track team ready to shine

      Gaffney High boys track coach James Davis made clear that he expects big things from his team at the Region II-4A meet at Dorman on Thursday and Friday. Davis said he expects to advance to the state qualifier in at least 12 events. The top five finishers in each event move on to the state qualifier at Spring Valley.

      The Gaffney High softball team needs to hit the ball better to move forward in the playoffs. The No. 2 seed Lady Indians open district play Thursday at home against fourth-seeded Lancaster at 6:30 p.m. Wren, the district's top seed, battles Aiken in the other district opener.
