GHS track team ready to shine

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney High boys track coach James Davis made clear that he expects big things from his team at the Region II-4A meet at Dorman on Thursday and Friday.

Davis said he expects to advance to the state qualifier in at least 12 events. The top five finishers in each event move on to the state qualifier at Spring Valley.

"We've been practicing hard and tuning up," he said. "I expect a strong showing."

The field events, along with the preliminaries in the 100 and 200 meter races, 110 hurdles and 4x800 meter relay, will be held Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m.

The running events will take place on Friday.

Joe Craig and Dennis Dawkins could advance in as many as three events, including the 100 and 200 meter races and the 4x100 meter relay.

Kenard Lipscomb will be looking to return to the state finals in the 800 meters, while Darius Dawkins and Denzell Good are threats to advance in the shot put and discus.

Jordan Manning in the long jump and hurdles, Quincey Jackson in the 400 hurdles and Denard Smith in the long jump are other Indians with a chance to advance to the state qualifier.

On the girls' side, Gaffney's Shamaka Adams could finish among the top five in the 400 meter race and 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.
