$26,000 in Accommodations Tax money available Like a long, lost rich uncle, the city's Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee soon will be filling the wallets of several financially-strapped local organizations again this year. Organizations can apply by picking up an application at the city clerk's office. The applications must be returned by Monday, May 12 - two days before the advisory committee meets to hear the requests. On May 21, the committee will make their recommendations public. Council typically rubber stamps the recommendations in June. This year, the committee will dole out about $26,000 in A-tax revenue - down about $4,000 from a year ago. The South Carolina Peach Festival received nearly onehalf of the available funds a year ago. The remaining $18,000 was divided among The Cherokee Alliance for the Visual Arts (CAVA), the Cherokee Historical Preservation Society (CHAPS), the Downtown Business Association, Veterans Day Organization, Gaffney Visitors Center and the Broad River Antique Power Association. - Larry Hilliard |
