GHS boys'track team places third at Region II-4A meet Gaffney High boys track coach James Davis issued a goodhearted warning to his Region II-4A rivals when he said last week he expected his team to have a strong showing at the region meet. His prediction came true as the Indians finished second in six events and qualified for this Saturday's state qualifier in 12 events. The top five finishers in each event move to the state qualifier. "I'm happy but not satisfied," Davis said. Gaffney speedster Joe Craig placed second in the 200 and 4x100 meter relay and third in the 100 meter race. Kenard Lipscomb, who advanced to the state meet last year, finished second in the 800 meters. The performances of Craig and Lipscomb weren't a surprise, but Jordan Manning's second place showing in the high jump was. Manning posted a personal best with a jump of 6'-2." "This is his first year of jumping," Davis said. The Indians also advanced to the state qualifier in the 4x800 meter relay (Jerquel Tate, Kenard Lipscomb, Chris Guyton and Deion Cunningham) and 4x400 relay (Dennis Dawkins, Kenard Lipscomb, Denard Lipscomb and Craig). Quincey Jackson will be participating in the state qualifier after a third place finish in the 400 hurdles and Denzell Good will be making the trip to Spring Valley to compete in the shot put and discus. Gaffney's Sherrod Lipscomb also qualified in the discus. Cameron Smith placed second in the long jump. Gaffney finished third in the team standings. |
