Blacksburg attorney briefs town council on possible sale of gas company

By JOE L. HUGHES II Ledger Staff Writer joe@gaffneyledger.com

Blacksburg Town Council members spent much of Tuesday afternoon in a closed session as the governing body received legal advice about the possible sale of the town's gas company.

Officials spent close to three hours negotiating with members of a York County firm interested in obtaining the Blacksburg Gas Company (BGC) from the town. Though talks are apparently ongoing, Blacksburg town attorney Larry Flynn said a deal is not yet in place.

"The town simply received legal counsel," Flynn said. "No action was taken in regard to the gas company... we are simply negotiating."

Talks proposing the sale of the gas company have been ongoing since shortly after the departure last year of Blacksburg's primary purchaser of the natural resource, Hanson Brick Company.

The BGC, which has been operated locally since 1950, provides service to approximately 624 local customers. The system has a fair market value of between $2.1 and $2.4 million.
