Students are 'stepping up' The life of an elementary school student is relatively basic, receiving a daily regimen of learning alphabet and numbers with lunch and recess sandwiched somewhere in between. While learning is important, B.D. Lee Elementary students are learning lessons of life by helping raise funds for cancer research. The school has hosted a number of events and sold school supplies to support the cause. However, when it came time to find different ideas to raise funds for B.D. Lee's Relay for Life effort, pre-K and special education teacher Jennipher Griffin knew exactly what to do. "The kids kept asking me when there would be another step-show at the school," Griffin said. "I told them there would be another show soon, and I wanted to keep my word." To support the school and county's Relay for Life goals, the school will host the "Stomping for a Cure" stepshow May 2. Local middle and high school teams will be involved in the volunteer step-show, along with Upstate fraternities and sororities. B.D. Lee set a goal of $300 when it began raising funds for this year's Relay. Griffin said the school has far exceeded that amount, with students chipping in both time and money to help. "We sold pencils, ribbons and paper hearts, along with the students continually giving up spare change and dollars," Griffin said. "Everyone has been involved and all of us here are happy with the success." Doors open for the step show at 5:30 p.m. with the festivities beginning at 6 p.m. There is no charge for children age 4 and younger. Persons age 5 to 18 can gain admission for $3 while adults will be charged $5. For more information, call the school at (864) 489-5748. |
