14 groups want A-Tax funds

Fourteen organizations will ask the city's Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee to fill their wallets with some much-needed funds.

The committee is responsible for recommending how Gaffney City Council should dole out the $29,000 in A-tax monies the city can disperse this year. A-tax monies are a 2 percent surcharge on hotel stays.

Council must approve the recommendations.

The committee is expected to hear from representatives from each of the 14 organizations during a 3 p.m. meeting today. The requests total more than $79,000.

State guidelines require the organizations spend the money on tourism-related events or items.

Here is a list of the groups vying for a piece of the A-Tax pie:

S.C. Peach Festival: $20,000

Cherokee Historical Preservation Society (CHAPS): $6,000;

Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade: $3,000;

Morgan's Victory March: $6,020;

Downtown Business Association: $8,500;

American Legion Post 201: $4,000;

Broad River Power Association: $3,000;

Veterans Day Appreciation Organization: $4,500;

Friends of Cowpens: $2,500;

Cherokee County Arts Council: $5,000;

Martin Luther King, Jr. Luncheon Celebration: $5,000;

Cherokee Alliance for the Visual Arts (CAVA): $2,500;

Veterans Museum: $2,218.14; and, Gaffney Little Theater: $3,000.
