14 groups want A-Tax funds Fourteen organizations will ask the city's Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee to fill their wallets with some much-needed funds. The committee is responsible for recommending how Gaffney City Council should dole out the $29,000 in A-tax monies the city can disperse this year. A-tax monies are a 2 percent surcharge on hotel stays. Council must approve the recommendations. The committee is expected to hear from representatives from each of the 14 organizations during a 3 p.m. meeting today. The requests total more than $79,000. State guidelines require the organizations spend the money on tourism-related events or items. Here is a list of the groups vying for a piece of the A-Tax pie: S.C. Peach Festival: $20,000 Cherokee Historical Preservation Society (CHAPS): $6,000; Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade: $3,000; Morgan's Victory March: $6,020; Downtown Business Association: $8,500; American Legion Post 201: $4,000; Broad River Power Association: $3,000; Veterans Day Appreciation Organization: $4,500; Friends of Cowpens: $2,500; Cherokee County Arts Council: $5,000; Martin Luther King, Jr. Luncheon Celebration: $5,000; Cherokee Alliance for the Visual Arts (CAVA): $2,500; Veterans Museum: $2,218.14; and, Gaffney Little Theater: $3,000. |
