Former GHS player and coach returns to staff

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

A former Gaffney High football standout is coming home.

Pending school board approval, Josh Caggiano, who played for the Indians in the early 1990s and was a member of former coach Joe Montgomery's staff until 1999, has joined coach Phil Strickland's staff.

Caggiano left the Indians to become a varsity assistant coach at Palmetto High School. Caggiano then became the defensive coordinator at Broome.

Strickland said Caggiano will likely coach the outside linebackers.

Caggiano replaces Marcus Bradley, who has left the staff to become a graduate assistant at Clemson University. Bradley will work as a strength and conditioning coach for the Tigers.

Bradley coached the defensive backs, but Strickland said that job will likely go to Dan Jones, the Indians' defensive coordinator.

Strickland said Caggiano is a welcome addition to the coaching staff.

"Josh brings a lot to the table," Strickland said. "He is a very knowledgeable coach. He started his career here and has been away. He will be an asset to the program."

Strickland added that Gaffney High Principal Marlene Davis is happy about the hire since Caggiano is known as an "excellent classroom teacher."
