Marine to be inducted into Hall of Bravery
      U.S. Marine Cpl. Thurman D. Mills, who served in the Vietnam War, will be inducted into the Cherokee County Hall of Bravery May 26 in a Memorial Day ceremony planned for downtown Gaffney. Mills will be recognized at the 10:30 a.m. service at the war memorial in front of the Cherokee County Administration Building.

County working on guidelines to improve conditions at animal shelter
      Don't look for any radical solutions or wild spending sprees to address areas of concern at the local animal shelter, a county official said. "We will do the things to better the situation there that are within our means," Cherokee County Public Works Committee Chairman Bailey Humphries said.

Police continue investigations of river deaths
      Investigations into two deaths in which bodies were discovered in the Broad River remained active Thursday with no immediate word yet on when they will reach finality. This past Saturday, a 17- year-old Gaffney teen, Anthony Bernard Fair Jr., drowned in the Broad River just above the Broad River Electric Hydro Dam.

Peachtree Centre plans fund raiser
      Peachtree Centre will have a fish fry fundraiser on Friday, June 20, to raise money to purchase a flat screen television for each of the units. Plates will be $5, pick-up only, and will include fish, baked beans, cole slaw and roll.

Tent crusade begins May 18 in Blacksburg
      BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg area churches will be sponsoring a tent crusade May 18-22 at 7 p.m. at Ed Brown's Rodeo in Blacksburg. Evangelist Braxton Hunter, a young and energetic speaker, will bring each evening's message. Special music will be provided each night by the local choirs and music ministers.

Man says argument led to attempted assault
      A 33-year-old Tucker Road, Blacksburg, man claimed a man tried to stab him with a 12-inch kitchen knife during an altercation May 13. According to a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the two men had been engaged in a verbal argument that became physical at about 5 a.m. May 13.

Her students made a total of 1,062 calls in the two months to The Ledger's automated school information service. Students sought clues to solve math word problems and reminders about homework assignments.

Grandson graduates Clemson
      Timothy Charles ("Chase") Pettit graduated summa cum laude from Clemson University Calhoun Honors College on Friday, May 9, with a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering. He has been accepted into Clemson's PhD program and will pursue his master's and doctorate degrees beginning this fall.

GHS grad earns law degree from Charleston Southern
      CHARLESTON - Chisa Johnson Putman of Cowpens received a law degree Saturday, May 10, during the second graduation convocation of the Charleston School of Law. After three years of study, Putman was one of 163 students to receive the juris doctor degree.
