Man says argument led to attempted assault

A 33-year-old Tucker Road, Blacksburg, man claimed a man tried to stab him with a 12-inch kitchen knife during an altercation May 13.

According to a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the two men had been engaged in a verbal argument that became physical at about 5 a.m. May 13.

No injuries were reported.

Donald Steve Deaton, 40, of Tucker Road, was booked on a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, according to Cherokee County Detention Center records.

A copper thief or thieves struck a North Logan Street property owned by AT&T, cutting a hole in a fence to gain entry.

The thefts occurred sometime between 6:30 p.m. on May 13 and 6:30 a.m. on May 14, according to a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. The thief or thieves stole six or seven bundles of loose copper wire, approximately 300 feet in total.

The copper is valued at $1,000 while the fence damage is estimated at $500.

A burglar or burglars who entered a Chandler Drive apartment May 14 apparently walked away with frozen steaks and prescription medications.

The break-in occurred sometime between 2:10 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to the Gaffney Police Department.

The burglar(s) took two steaks from a freezer, a faux gold chain and three recently filled prescriptions for the drugs Zoloft, Lyrica and hydrocodone.

The stolen items are valued at $75.

The Gaffney Police Department reported the theft of a 12-foot canoe from a College Drive residence.

The canoe was taken from a yard in the 100 block sometime between May 7 and May 14.

The green-colored vinyl canoe, valued at $700, had two paddles strapped to its interior.

A Gaffney man learned his identity had been stolen by someone who sought medical services from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in 2005.

According to a report at the Gaffney Police Department, a West Rutledge Street man learned recently that his South Carolina income tax refund was being withheld from him to cover an unpaid hospital bill from 2005. The man never went to the hospital in 2005 and he learned hospital bills under his name and Social Security number were being sent to an address in Mill Springs, N.C.
