Police continue investigations of river deaths
Investigations into two deaths in which bodies were discovered in the Broad River remained active Thursday with no immediate word yet on when they will reach finality.
This past Saturday, a 17- year-old Gaffney teen, Anthony Bernard Fair Jr., drowned in the Broad River just above the Broad River Electric Hydro Dam.
On Jan. 4, the body of a missing Gaffney woman, 25- year-old Verlishia Littlejohn, was discovered just below the dam. Her car was found several days later, about six miles upriver.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler confirmed Thursday he has not made rulings on the manner of Fair's death, or ruled on the cause or manner of Littlejohn's death.
Both cases remain open, he said.
Fair was camping along the Broad River last Saturday with three other people.
Fowler had said last weekend that he learned from Fair's mother the teen could not swim but was not afraid to be around water. He had said his office was investigating how the teen got into the river.
Littlejohn, who was a care worker at the Charles Lea Center in Spartanburg, went missing Nov. 28, 2007. Her last words were heard during an interrupted cell phone conversation.
