Local gymnast earns trip to national competition

      Growing up in the football hotbed of Gaffney and as the daughter of Gaffney High assistant football coach Dan Jones, it seemed only natural for Claire Jones - despite her gender - to want to play for a youth football team. Intrasquad game will end drills for 'Cats

      Blacksburg football players will celebrate the end of spring practice May 23 with an intrasquad game. There is no charge to attend the spring game at 7 p.m. in T.A. Campbell Stadium. Players will be split evenly into two teams for the contest.

Summer basketball league begins play today

      There is no way around it. The team that captures the Cherokee County Summer Youth League Division I championship will have to earn it. The league tips off today with four games at B.D. Elementary School. "We try to make each team competitive," league founder Laymond Dewberry said. "Each game will be competitive.

      Phils blank Braves 5-0 Cole Hamels pitched his first career shutout, Ryan Howard homered and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 5-0 on Thursday night. Pedro Feliz and Shane Victorino also homered and drove in two runs each for the Phillies, who lead the major leagues with 59 home runs.
