Six Limestone alumni honored; Hamrick named honorary alumnus

WYLIE HAMRICK WYLIE HAMRICK Limestone College recognized six outstanding alumni and named a well-known College benefactor and leader as an honorary alumnus during the Alumni Reunion Weekend Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 19 in Stephenson Dining Hall. Those honored were Robert R. Turbyfill, Jr., Alumnus of the Year; Philip Keith, Young Alumnus of the Year; Barbara Brown Parish, Service to Education; Wylie Hamrick, Honorary Alumnus; Iris Hollingsworth West, Service to Church; Patricia Mobley Spurlin, Service to Community; and Frances Jewell Bagwell, Service to College.

Robert Turbyfill graduated magna cum laude from Limestone in 1989 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration management. He is a member of the Curtis Society and a former member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors and the College Board of Trustees. Turbyfill lives in Augusta, Georgia where he is the Marketing Services Manager at Thermal Ceramics, Inc., an international company headquartered in Augusta.

Philip Keith grew up in Union and graduated from Limestone in 2001 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and mathematics. While at Limestone, Keith was president of his sophomore class and a four-year letterman on the men's basketball team. He still holds the single-game record for three-pointers made with 11. He also was a member of the men's soccer team. Keith now lives in Columbia and is about to be awarded his medical doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

PAT SPURLIN PAT SPURLIN Barbara Brown Parish graduated magna cum laude from Limestone College in 1959 with bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. Since graduating, Parish has spent 42 years in education as a teacher and administrator in the York and Clover School Districts. She is currently the Coordinator of the Title I and EIA Compensatory Remedial Programs.

Wylie L. Hamrick is an iconic businessman, leader, and benefactor in the Cherokee County community. A Gaffney native and graduate of Clemson University (1950), Hamrick is Chairman of the Board and Director of Hamrick Mills, Inc. and Director of the Fullerton Foundation, Inc. He has been a significant part of Limestone College for nearly 30 years as a member of the College's Board of Trustees in 1980 and received an honorary doctor of public service award from Limestone in 2001. He and late wife Frances made a generous contribution to the renovation of Hamrick Hall of Science in 2004.

Iris Hollingsworth West is a native of Spindale, North Carolina and graduated from Limestone College in 1956 with a bachelor of arts degree in music education. Iris also attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. West has spent the past fifty-plus years in music ministries as a music director, organist, pianist, and choir director in churches across the southern United States. In 1998, West retired and moved to Gaffney where she now serves as the organist and Senior Adult Choir Director at First Baptist Church.

A Gaffney native, Patricia Mobley Spurlin graduated from Limestone in 1960 with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. She would go on to a 33-year teaching career in the Cherokee County school system while earning a master of education degree from Winthrop. She now volunteers at local long-term care facilities such as Peachtree Center Magnolia's and her church. She is the Women's Missionary Union Director and a Sunday school teacher at Midway Baptist Church.

Frances Jewell Bagwell graduated from the Limestone College Block Program in 1985 with a bachelor of science degree in business

management. She was employed by the South Carolina Employment Security Commission until her retirement in 2003 where she was an ESC Program Assistant and Administrative Specialist. Bagwell represented the Block Program during Limestone's Bicentennial Celebration in 1995 and served as President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors in 2001. She is currently a member of the President's Advisory Council .
