Man charged following Sunday shooting

Gaffney police have charged a 27-year-old city man with assault and battery with intent to kill following a Sunday afternoon shooting incident.

William Tyrone Tate, of Suez Street, was arrested Sunday. He remained at the Cherokee County Detention Center as of Tuesday afternoon in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Suez Street on Sunday at about 3:50 p.m. regarding a report of a shooting. They found John Raymond Austin, 27, of West Birnie Street, walking in the roadway.

Austin, who had a wound on his left temple, told police he had been shot at, according to a police report. Austin's vehicle, a gold-colored Saturn, appeared to have been struck in the driver's side rear window and door jamb with bird shot, police said.

Police indicated in a report the two men are in an ongoing dispute over a woman.
