Former officer victim of thieves
      A former Gaffney Police Department officer found himself in a reverse position last week, this time as a victim. A storage locker on Floyd Baker Boulevard being rented by former Sgt. Scott Tallent, 41, of Gaffney, was broken into sometime between 5 p.m. on May 12 and 9 a.m. on May 13, according to a report at the Gaffney Police Department.

Worshippers filed into the tent on the ground's upper parking area with Bibles in hand. The revival is being sponsored by Blacksburg area churches. Services begin at 7 p.m., and will run through Thursday, May 22. There is no charge to attend, though a love offering will be taken each night. Services were cancelled Tuesday due to severe weather.

School district's proposed budget will be posted on Web site
      Residents can give their opinion of this year's $59.5 million school budget at a public hearing at 6:30 p.m., June 9, at the district office on Twin Lake Road. School trustees will vote on final approval of the budget at the regular board meeting after the public hearing. The proposed budget is available for viewing on the Internet at: www.cherokee1.k12.sc.us.

Super's evaluation postponed
      With another election looming, the Cherokee County School Board will wait until February to evaluate superintendent Dr. Bill James. The school board does an annual evaluation as part of the superintendent's contract. They were originally scheduled to take up the issue again in August.

B.D. Elementary School awarded for its efforts to create a friendly environment
      B.D. Lee Elementary was honored Monday with a Red Carpet award in recognition of its efforts to create a welcoming environment for school visitors. B.D. Lee Elementary is among 285 schools that applied for the Red Carpet award last fall.

Woman's year-old cat mutliated
      An Anthony Street woman reported to police a case of cruelty to animals after finding her year-old cat had been mutilated May 10. According to a report from Gaffney Police Department, the woman said she found her cat dead on a neighboring property. The cat had sustained a 12-inch cut. Police said they could not find the location where the animal could have been injured.

     CRASHED CRUISER- A Cherokee County Sheriff's Office deputy responding to assist the Gaffney Police Department with a call early Sunday was involved in a crash.The vehicle sustained front end damage and had its airbags deployed. Chief Deputy Joel Hill said Deputy John Boyd was treated and released from the hospital following the incident, which occurred at an intersection near the old Gaffney Post Office. The accident is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Hill said. A report from the Highway Patrol was not available Tuesday.

Man charged following Sunday shooting
      Gaffney police have charged a 27-year-old city man with assault and battery with intent to kill following a Sunday afternoon shooting incident. William Tyrone Tate, of Suez Street, was arrested Sunday. He remained at the Cherokee County Detention Center as of Tuesday afternoon in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Streets to be closed for helicopters
      The corner of Floyd Baker Boulevard and Limestone Street will be closed to traffic beginning at 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28. The closing is necessary to accommodate the Wings & Rotors helicopters that will utilize the First Baptist Church parking lot as a landing and takeoff area.

Absentee ballots available
      Local residents who wish to cast absentee ballots in the June 10 primary election may do so now at the voter registration office at the Peachtree Centre, 1434 N. Limestone St., Room 1008 on the first floor. The office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., and will be open Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. until noon.

Daughter of deceased Blacksburg resident to graduate from Walnut Creek Campus
      Alonna B. Lee will graduate from Walnut Creek Campus on May 22, 2008, during 7 p.m. commencement exercises at 7 Flags Event Center in Clive, Iowa. Lee is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Van Wagenen of West Des Moines, Iowa, and the late Timmy D. Lee who lived in Blacksburg. Her maternal grandparents are Lona B. Sweatt of Bennettsville and the late Namon B. Sweatt.

GHS student's composition wins regional
      A music composition about fear by Gaffney High senior Lee Cutchin won a regional contest May 11. Cutchin received a Superior rating for his composition "De Metu" at a Southeast Regional competition held by the National Federation of Music Clubs. He is one of 64 students to submit entries in the music composition contest.

GHS student awarded scholarship from Winthrop
      Katherine Olivia Rhyne has been awarded the President's' Academic Scholarship from Winthrop University. She is also recipient of a Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, a merit-based scholarship program administered by the S.C. Commission on Higher Education.
