Indians plan busy summer
Gaffney's Jeff Brown and his teammates will have a busy summer. Summer basketball team camps don't generate the hype of regular-season games, but they go along way in determining the team's fortunes.
That's the reason the Gaffney Indians boys varsity team will have a busy summer - as usual.
"We've always tried to do as much as we could in the summer," Gaffney coach Mark Huff said. "I feel like that's the time that you can really improve as a player."
The Indians will begin their summer program on Friday, June 13 for a day of games at Spartanburg Christian Academy.
The Indians will make their annual trek to Lander University for a three-day team camp, beginning on Friday, June 20. The camp concludes on Sunday, June 22.
Gaffney will stay closer to home for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes team camp June 26-28. Limestone College will once again host the popular event.
Gaffney will travel to Byrnes for two days of games July 7-8.
This year there will be more competition for playing time with the loss of six seniors.
"We have a lot of openings," Huff said. "We will give all the kids an opportunity to play."
Gaffney finished with a 16-7 record, but missed the playoffs. But help is on the way. The jayvee team finished with a 12-6 mark and the ninth-grade team finished with an impressive 17-3 mark.
"A lot of teams would have loved to have been 16-7 like we were last year," Huff said. "It's not like the cupboard is bare for us."
The Indians will likely enter the season without a proven big man.
"Size will be a concern for us again," the Gaffney coach said. "But don't need to have size to win."
