York outslugs Post 109 junior legion team, 16-6
JOEY COPELAND York didn't take long to get going against American Legion Post 109 junior team on Tuesday.
York scored a run in the first and six more in the second en route to an easy 16-6 victory over visiting Gaffney.
Post 109 suffered its second straight loss to York to drop to 3-3 in the League VI standings.
"Our pitchers just didn't throw strikes," Gaffney coach Travis Clary said. "We just came out flat. This is the first game that I've been disappointed. We left too many runners on base."
The first inning summed up the game for Post 109. Gaffney had runners on second and third with no outs but the next three batters struck out to end the threat.
York scored three times in the third and had a sixrun fourth to blow the game open. The game was called after five innings on the 10-run rule.
Matt Gault started for Post 109 but was relieved in the second by James Martin. Bryon Munsterman finished up the game for Post 109.
Gaffney had just six hits.
Post 109 tied the game at 1 with a run in the second inning. Ryan Frock singled and scored on Nick Smiley's fielder's choice.
Smiley, who had two hits, reached on an error in the fourth. Joey Copeland also reached on an error before Dylan Huskey singled and Jared Mills had a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, Gaffney loaded the bases with no outs but only scored one run. Frock and Clay McKowen each walked and Smith singled to load the bases. Copeland scored Frock with a sacrifice fly.
Gaffney hosts Chester in a doubleheader Thursday at 6 p.m.
