POLICE REPORT

Police stop women from taking items from Salvation Army dropbox

Two women were stopped from taking donated items from a Salvation Army drop box May 31.

According to the Gaffney Police Department, a passerby informed police that two people were taking items from the drop box on West Robinson Street. When police arrived, they found one woman holding bed rails and the other holding a microwave. The women initially told police they were dropping items off. Later, after police pointed to security cameras in the area, the women acknowledged taking the items but said they did not believe they were stealing.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported two gas drive-offs May 29.

According to incident reports, one drive-off occurred at about 12:49 p.m. when the driver of a silver Honda with a North Carolina license plate left the Carolina Line Convenience Store on Cliffside Highway without paying for $30 in gas.

The second gas drive-off occurred at about 3:36 p.m. from the Kangaroo Express on Shelby Highway. The driver of a vehicle with a South Carolina tag drove off without paying for $50 in gas.

Police were able to trace the license plate numbers to the registered owners, but did not indicate in their reports if charges were filed.

A Beech Street rental property was burglarized sometime in May.

According to an incident report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, someone broke into the residence in the 1600 block sometime between May 2 and May 30 by removing an air conditioning unit from a window. Once inside, the burglar(s) stole wiring and damaged a glass table. They also took the air conditioning unit. Theft and damage losses were estimated at $600.

The Gaffney Police Department is investigating a May 31 assault during which a 51-year-old Short Peeler Street man was cut in the face with a knife.

According to an incident report, the assault occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on Mill Street. An Oakland Avenue man allegedly cut the victim with a knife on his face and on other areas of his body. No charges had been reported as of Tuesday.

A 53-year-old Gold Mine Road man was arrested May 28 on two firearms charges, according to a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Police claimed they found Dickie Ray McAbee, of Gold Mine Road, firing a .357-caliber handgun and a sawedoff shotgun while intoxicated.

The Gaffney Police Department reported the burglary of a Chestnut Street home.

The unknown burglar(s) forced entry into the residence in the 200 block and stole a computer and deposit box. Theft losses are estimated at $1,213. The burglary occurred between May 22 and May 30.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported the arrest of a Whites Road man May 31 for the alleged theft of copper.

According to a police report, Aaron Randall, 30, was observed May 31 pushing a bike with a duffel bag and two spools of copper wire on Ford Road. Randall allegedly told police he got the copper from his work truck and had permission to do so. An official at MRB Inc., on Beaver Dam Road, later told police Randall did not have permission to take anything from his truck.

A Mosswood Road woman's purse was stolen from a vehicle on Ellis Ferry Avenue on May 31. According to a report at the Gaffney Police Department, the purse is valued at $65, as was a wallet inside the purse. The woman lost about $81 in cash and a checkbook as well.

Total theft losses are estimated at more than $200. The theft occurred between 11:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.

A rear tine tiller was reported stolen from a Blacksburg property between May 31 and June 1.

The tilling equipment is valued at about $500, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. The item was taken from a home on John Cross Road.

A Cowpens woman reported the theft of about $60 in gas from her car, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

The theft occurred on Lake Hill Drive between May 27 and June 1, while the woman was away from her home. Upon returning home the woman noticed the tank had been drained.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a May 31 home invasion and assault on Fitch Road.

According to a police report, two men forced their way into a residence in the 300 block by kicking open a door. One of the men then punched the resident of the home.

A burglar or burglars entered a Mattie Street home last week causing roughly $2,500 in drywall damage.

According to a report from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the burglar(s) forced entry to the home in the 200 block of the street and threw an unspecified object into walls. Nothing appeared missing. The incident occurred within a few days of May 31, when the damage was discovered.

The owner of a Rutherfordton Highway residence sustained more than $2,000 in theft and damage losses when a thief or thieves targeted an air conditioning unit.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the air unit was taken from the home between May 1 and June 2. The thief or thieves also stole some copper and damaged a power box.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported an attempted burglary on South Charleston Street in Blacksburg on June 2.

According to an incident report, an unknown person or persons tried to gain entry to the home in the 600 block sometime between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Police said there were signs of scratch marks on the front door. No entry was made.

A car on Bonner Road in Gaffney was broken into June 2 and a thief or thieves stole a woman's purse from the interior.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the thieve or thieves used an unknown object to unlock a door of the car, which was parked in the 1900 block of the road. Taken were a woman's purse, which contained prescription medications and cosmetics, as well as two cartons of cigarettes and a racing-related magnet. Theft losses are estimated at $135 while damage is estimated at $200.
