Gaffney junior legion bounces back to sweep Chester

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

In a doubleheader loss to York Tuesday, Post 109 junior team's pitchers couldn't throw strikes.

That all changed against Chester on Thursday.

Joey Copeland allowed just five hits and Corey Crissone tossed a four hitter and gave up just one walk to lead Post 109 to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Chester, 12-2 and 14-4.

"Our pitchers threw strikes," Post 109 coach Travis Clary said. "We had just three walks in two games. We played almost two flawless ball games."

Post 109 moves to 5-3 in league play with the sweep.

In the opener, Jared Mills was the hot hitter with three hits and three RBIs. Dylan Huskey had two hits and Michael Wright knocked in two runs for Post 109.

Chester jumped on Crissone for two runs in the first, but Post 109 answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Crissone helped his own cause with a RBI single to score Huskey, who opened the inning with a single.

Wright knocked in two more runs with a double before Alex Trammell capped the scoring with a RBI single.

Gaffney scored three more runs in the second on singles by Mills and Josh Mata.

In the third inning, Mills cleared the bases with a triple that bounced off the outfield wall.

Smiley knocked in Post 109's final run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

In the nightcap, Gaffney went up 3-1 in the first on a 2-run double by Smiley and a RBI single from Clay McKowen.

After Chester tied it at 3, Gaffney went ahead 4-3 in the fourth on a walk to Wright and Richie Williams' RBI double.

Gaffney sent 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run explosion in the fourth. Mata had a sacrifice fly and RBI double in the inning. Mills, Smiley and Wright all had run-scoring hits in the inning.

Smiley was the offensive star, going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs..

"I thought we showed a lot of character and heart to bounce back from the games on Tuesday," Clary said. "I'm very pleased with the way we bounced back."
