School board approves $61.8 million budget

      The Cherokee County School Board unanimously approved a $61.8 million budget Monday that includes no tax increase and limited teacher attrition. Revenues increased 5.3 percent over the previous school year.

Suspicious fires being investigated

      Two suspicious fires broke out hours apart at the same West Frederick Street residence Sunday, leaving Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis and firefighters to spend the night securing the likely crime scene until police investigators had a chance to scour it for evidence in daylight.

Ride raises $8,000

      A motorcycle ride raised $8,000 Saturday morning to help Habitat for Humanity with its goal of finishing five new houses this month. More than 70 motorcycle riders hit the highway on a route that took them from the Cherokee Shrine Club to the historic Rose Hill Plantation in Union.

June 20 is deadline to enter New Talent contest
      The Blacksburg Rotary Club is again sponsoring the South Carolina Peach Festival New Talent Night. The event will be held Tuesday, June 24 at 7 p.m. in Fullerton Auditorium on the campus of Limestone College. There will be two age categories - those under 15 and those 15 and older.

POLICE REPORT
      Three puppies were reported stolen from a Bonner Road property June 4. Sometime between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, an unknown person stole three water spaniel/cocker spaniel mix puppies. The dogs were about 6 months old. They are valued at $310.

The Hoppers coming to town
      The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with Larry Bright Promotions, is sponsoring The Hoppers in Concert for two shows on Saturday, July 12. A matinee performance is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the evening concert at 7 p.m. in Fullerton Auditorium on the Limestone College campus in Gaffney.
