Good music isn't the only reason people flock to the 'Country Jam'
Providing flavors that cannot be found on any breakfast table, the Country Jam concert series in Blacksburg has made a name for itself among music enthusiasts.
Beginning as a reason to prove a friend wrong, the concert series has blossomed over the past four years.
"A friend of mine suggested hosting a 'pickin' parlor' where I could host music events. I didn't believe it would work, but did it anyway to prove to him and myself that it would not succeed," John Roberts said. "But when it opened the venue became sort of a 'Field of Dreams,' a place that when open would draw people."
The music series, which presents bluegrass, country and gospel music, usually brings in four to six bands each week to entertain crowds that average about 150.
"I like to promote a family environment here," Roberts said. "That is why there is no drinking or smoking on the premises. I believe it could give people the wrong idea."
On Friday nights all have the opportunity to see local talents perform free of charge.
Roberts rents the building to bands and other performers Saturday nights on what he has dubbed as "Feature night." On these nights, groups can choose whether to charge visitors to enter.
Many of the families visiting Country Jam come from North Carolina cities like Charlotte, Hickory, Lenoir and Gastonia. While the support of those from outside of Cherokee County is satisfying, Roberts said he wonders why local support is hard to come by.
"I believe 90 percent of the parking area sometimes is filled by people who have North Carolina license plates," Roberts said. "But I honestly hope as word gets out about our show that we will start to see more local support."
Regardless of whether one is from Cherokee County or elsewhere, Roberts said visitors have a hard time turning down one of the venue's infamous hot dogs.
"I have had people come from all areas simply to get a hot dog," Roberts said. "Our show in some cases is not the reason why they come."
Homemade desserts, barbecue sandwiches and popcorn are also sold at the venue's concession stand. Country Jam is located at 810 Blacksburg Highway. For information on upcoming concerts and performers call Roberts at (864) 993- 8244 or visit countryjam.org.
