App. State meets

with N.C. governor

Gov. Mike Easley and the General Assembly have celebrated another national championship for the Appalachian State University football team.

Easley met with the coaching staff and some players Tuesday morning at the Executive Mansion, where they showed off the three NCAA championship football trophies the team has won in a row.

The latest came in December, when the Mountaineers beat Delaware to win the Football Championship Subdivision title.

Easley proclaimed Tuesday as ''Mountaineer Football Day'' and asked everyone in the state to wear black and gold to honor the team.

School Chancellor Kenneth Peacock and coach Jerry Moore addressed lawmakers later Tuesday as they passed a resolution celebrating their accomplishments.

Appalachian State upset Michigan at the Wolverines' stadium in September.

Cubs top

Braves, 10-5

Another home victory for the Chicago Cubs. More bad injury news for the Atlanta Braves.

Ted Lilly overcame a shaky start for a victory as Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto homered Tuesday night, sending the Cubs to a 10-5 win over the Braves and running Chicago's record at Wrigley Field to 27-8.

But it was a tough day and night for the Braves. After John Smoltz had successful shoulder surgery Tuesday - leaving his future unclear - his longtime teammate Tom Glavine was forced to leave after three innings with an elbow strain that will send him to the DL.

''That's part of the reason I've been trying to fight through it with everything we have going on,'' said Glavine.
