Post 109 pounds opponents
This week, Gaffney American Legion Post 109 has resembled the 1927 New York Yankees, bludgeoning two opponents by a combined score of 32- 10.
On Tuesday, Gaffney unleashed its latest offensive fury against Greer. Dylan Jolley, Lee Gerwick and McCrae Norton all had three hits in a 12-9 victory.
On Monday, Post 109 pounded out an impressive 20-1 victory over first-place Spartanburg. It was Spartanburg's first loss since 2006.
"We were very aggressive in balls in the strike zone," Gaffney coach Jeff Osment said. "We took advantage of their pitchers' mistakes and scored a lot with two-out hits."
Gaffney, which improves to 4-1 in league play, is now tied for first place with Inman and Spartanburg.
Gaffney jumped to a 3-0 first-inning lead against Greer. Jolley and Gerwick each singled and advanced a base on Norton's sacrifice fly. Gaffney took advantage of a fielding miscue to score the game's first run. Another run came home on Michael Hughey's fielder's choice before Bryan Parsons scored on Bubba Wright's single.
After Greer roughed up Gaffney starter Jake Watson for two runs in the first inning, Jolley scored on a wild pitch, Parsons delivered a 2-run double and Hughey had a RBI single to extend Post 109's lead to 7-2.
In the third inning, Gaffney made it 8-2 when Bobby Jackson scored on Jolley's sacrifice fly.
Greer pulled within 8-6 with three runs in the third and another run in the fifth.
But the Post 109 bats remained hot, scoring two runs in the seventh and single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
Jason Biershenk relieved Watson in the fifth and went the rest of the way to pick up the victory.
Biershenk and Wright each had two hits, while Parsons and Hughey both knocked in two runs.
In its game on Monday, Gaffney avenged a 4-0 loss to Spartanburg just five days earlier. In that game, Gaffney mustered just two hits off Spartanburg ace David Haselden.
"It's a big win because it looks like our league will be tight," Osment said.
Jackson and Hughey each homered, while Gerwick had four hits and Hughey and Norton each had three hits for Post 109.
Jackson earned the win, allowing just four hits and striking out five in eight innings.
"Bobby did a great job of throwing strikes," Osment said.
Leading 10-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Gaffney appeared to have the game locked up on the 10-run rule. But Spartanburg scored a run when catcher Bryan Parsons dropped a throw home that would have ended the game.
Post 109 then scored 10 more runs in the top of the eighth for the game's final margin.
Gaffney is off for the remainder of the week and will return to action Monday at Inman.
