Gaffney hoops coach: 'It was a good day of basketball'
Gaffney High boys varsity basketball coach Mark Huff was happy to be coaching basketball again.
Huff and 20 Indians played four games Friday at a shootout hosted by Spartanburg Christian High School.
"I told the kids that all in all it was a good day of basketball," Huff said.
The varsity finished with a 3-1 record, beating Union, Laurens and Spartanburg Christian. The Indians lone loss was on a 3-point buzzer beater to Irmo.
Gaffney opened the shootout with an exciting 72-70 victory over Union. The Indians trailed by 11 points to open the fourth quarter, tied the end of regulation and won it 72-70 in a 1-minute overtime session.
"The kids really played hard," Huff said.
Gaffney had an easier time in beating Laurens, 58-38. But the competition got tougher against Irmo, which topped the Indians, 59-56.
Huff blamed the loss on turnovers.
The Indians rebounded to beat Spartanburg Christian, 55-46.
"That was our fourth game and the kids were really tired, but they never stopped competing," Huff said.
The Indians' vaunted fullcourt press looked in midseason form early on. But Huff said the press lost its effectiveness later in the day.
"Our defense looked good when we were fresh, but at the end we weren't jumping to the ball," he said.
Huff said the Indians executed well at times on offense, especially against Spartanburg Christian's zone.
"We were very patient against it," he said.
The Gaffney junior varsity team finished with a 2-1 record, with wins over Laurens and Spartanburg Christian and a loss to the Heathwood Hall varsity team.
The Indians will return to the court Wednesday against Kingsport-Dobyns Bennett High School of Tennessee. The game will be played at 6 p.m. at Wofford College.
