Tainted tomatoes taken off shelves locally
228 reportedly become sick from salmonella outbreak
      Reports of tomatoes contaminated with salmonella bacteria in more than a dozen states has prompted some local restaurants and supermarkets here to pull the fruit off shelves At least 228 cases reported in 23 states has caused popular chains like McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Burger King and Wendy's to voluntarily stop selling red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes.

City ready to put final touches on budget
Gaffney residents can voice opinion at 7 p.m. meeting
      City residents can have their say today at 7 p.m. on their council's 2008 budget. That $10,270,407 budget holds the line on taxes and gives city employees a 2 percent cost-of-living raise. The spending plan is about $500,000 less than last year's $10.8 million budget.

Thieves make off with $4,500 worth of metal from a Chesnee car lot
      A metal thief or thieves damaged 10 cars on a Chesnee car lot recently while stealing catalytic converters. According to a report from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, someone removed the catalytic converters from Whitey Greene's Truck Ranch on Rutherfordton Highway sometime between June 9 and June 12.

Local Elks Lodge pays honor to "Old Glory during annual Flag Day celebration
"Our Flag is at once a history, a declaration and prophecy."
      Many people might not have noticed the holiday celebrated on Saturday but that wasn't the case at Gaffney's Elks Lodge 1305. Members of the fraternal organization gathered Saturday in their West Oneal Street lodge to honor the 13 stripes and field of 50 stars that make up the U.S. flag.

Local man airlifted after shooting
      A 22-year-old man had to be airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center early Sunday morning after he was shot multiple times in the Cherokee County Courthouse overflow parking lot. The Gaffney Police Department wasn't able to release too many details Sunday afternoon because the case still was open and being actively investigated.

Administrator's wife dies
      Cherokee County Council was expected to consider final reading of its 2008 budget, but that will likely be postponed as council members mourn the death of the wife of Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary. Rhea Clary died Saturday after a lengthy illness.

Two city council races will be contested
      There won't be a lot of names on the city's August election ballot. Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly and District 4 city councilman Dennis Ramsey are the only incumbents facing opposition. Randall Moore will challenge 2-term incumbent Jolly, while local Realtor Geraldine Fowler will oppose Ramsey.

Local Meals on Wheels is thinking "green"
      As a means to help its ongoing effort to deliver hot meals to Cherokee County residents that are elderly or shut-in, the local Meals on Wheels has found an environmentally friendly way to bring in funds for the organization. Meals on Wheels began accepting used ink cartridges and cell phones six months ago.

Power outage Sunday morning leaves up to 2,000 customers in the dark
Power restored shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday morning
      Electric power was restored to between 1,500 and 2,000 Gaffney Board of Public Works customers yesterday around 9:10 a.m., about an hour after a switch at a Duke Energy power substation malfunctioned.

Police investigating theft of coins valued at $100,000
      The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of an estimated $100,000 in coins from a Blacksburg home during a June 11 burglary. According to a report at the sheriff's office, someone broke into a South Charleston Street home between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

HAY FEVER
     Farmers in Cherokee County have been busy cutting and baling hay the past few weeks in what most say has been a good cutting. with the hot dry weather in recent weeks, though, the prospects for a good second crop look dim.

Deadline nears to sign up for Festival's 'New Talent Night'
      The Blacksburg Rotary Club is again sponsoring the South Carolina Peach Festival New Talent Night. The event will be held Tuesday, June 24 at 7 p.m. in Fullerton Auditorium on the campus of Limestone College. There will be two age categories - those under 15 and those 15 and older.
