Lady Indians to attend North Carolina camp
The Lady Indians will attend the University of North Carolina basketball camp in July. The basketball skills of the Gaffney Lady Indians will be tested next month when they attend the prestigious University of North Carolina Basketball Camp.
Gaffney girls basketball coach Stacey Parris said the camp gives her team a chance to play against new competition.
"It's a big camp," she said. "We'll be able to play teams from out of the state and against some bigger competition."
Parris said she expects to field three teams, including varsity, junior varsity and middle school.
About 30 players will be making the trip, she said. The week-long camp begins July 10.
"Our middle school team attended the (North Carolina) camp the last two years and I thought we all should go," she said.
The trip is being financed through fundraisers, including car washes.
"It's an expensive camp," she said. "But we appreciate everybody who has donated at the car washes."
The Lady Indians also will participate in the FCA Camp at Limestone College on June 23-25.
The camps are part of a comprehensive summer program that combines conditioning and strength training with skill development. The 6-week program began June 1.
"We've had almost 30 kids take part," she said. "The players have responded very well. They just want to get better. This will make us a step ahead when preseason practice begins in November."
"We'll be a young team," she added. "But we have a bright future."
